NTA10 conference «Digitisation and culture»

14 – 16 november 2022, Bern

NTA10

Digitisation with its many levels has an impact as a far-reaching transformation process in society and affects all areas of life – thus culture is also affected. “Culture” encompasses places, actors, cultural formats and forms of expression as well as instances of mediation. The increasing interweaving of the virtual and analogue worlds raises a variety of questions for society and culture, democracy and politics.

These and other questions were discussed at the 10th NTA Conference in Bern from 14-16 November 2022.

Programme

he conference on the topic of digitalisation and culture drew attention to three thematic complexes:

First, the conference addressed fundamental questions about the transformation of society through digital processes. How does digitalisation change the "essence" of cultural forms of expression and our understanding of what constitutes "culture"? What are the opportunities for participation and also the risks? How do these developments affect state funding of culture? Do the strategies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland differ in this respect?

Secondly, the conference focused on the subsystem of art and culture. Digital technologies are changing artistic creation and artistic possibilities. How does this change the understanding of culture? How does the relationship between artists and their audience change? How do digital works remain part of the collective social memory? What does digital transformation mean for the audience's engagement with the world through the prism of culture and thus also for the reflection of the self?

Thirdly, the conference also addressed the democratic quality of culture. How are the places of cultural creation changing as places of critical reflection, including on digitalisation itself? How does it affect cultural life that commercial platforms increasingly appear as mediating instances, both for culture in its diversity and for artists?
