Swiss Open Research Data Grants

swissuniversities and the ETH Domain jointly organize the Swiss Open Research Data Grants (CHORD) programme. The collaboration enables coherent and broad bottom-up support for ORD practices across disciplines and higher education institutions in Switzerland, thereby facilitating the creation of synergies and complementarities. Furthermore, the collaboration ensures the efficient use of public funding available to swissuniversities and the ETH Domain.

Researchers from all disciplines and all types of higher education and research institutions are welcome to submit their project ideas to the programme. Applications are handled either by swissuniversities or by the ETH Domain, depending on eligibility (see also this graphic for an overview and please note that the EPFL and the ETH Zurich are eligible for both paths):

  • Project proposals from institutions eligible for PgB-funding and thus taking the swissuniversities path are evaluated through an open review process by the Open Science Reviewers' Pool. The decision-making body for these proposals is the Delegation Open Science. For funding through the swissuniversities path, the PgB-rules and the matching funds-principle apply. In case of cooperation with non-eligible partner institutions, please take note of section 3.1 of the guidelines for PgB-funding (in German, French or English). Below you will find more information on the open Calls for Proposals in the swissuniversities path.
  • Project proposals that are eligible for ETH Domain funding follow the ETH path and are thus evaluated by the ETH Domain Evaluation Group. The decision-making body for these proposals is the ETH Domain Steering Committee. Please see here for more information about open calls in the ETH Domain path.

Track A: Explore projects

  • Goal: this track encompasses early-phase exploration as well as the testing and prototyping of a potential ORD practice. It allows for engagement with a community without necessarily creating a final product. The objective is to help researchers explore if and how ORD practices can be developed.
     
  • Budget: the total cost of the project (including matching funds) must not exceed CHF 150,000.
     
  • Duration: up to 12-18 months, max. until the end of 2024.
     
  • Language: Please note that due to the international composition of the Open Science Reviewers' Pool, applications in English are preferred. Should you nevertheless wish to apply in German, French or Italian, please inform the General Secretariat as soon as possible so that a translation of the documents can be arranged.
     
  • Calls: 
    • Deadline Track A 1st Call: 2 August 2022 (call closed)
    • Deadline Track A 2nd Call: 31 December 2022 (call closed)
    • Deadline Track A 3rd Call: 2 June 2023 (call closed)

  • Funded projects:

Track B: Establish projects

  • Goal: Track B supports the anchoring of existing ORD practices that have a research agenda and a common understanding of ORD principles. It provides the opportunity to take these practices to the next level, improve their scope, and develop projects that can become de facto standards in a community and promote quality.
     
  • Budget: the total cost of the project (including matching funds) must not exceed CHF 1.5 million
     
  • Duration: up to 24 months, max. until the end of 2024.
     
  • Language: Please note that due to the international composition of the Open Science Reviewers' Pool, applications in English are preferred. Should you nevertheless wish to apply in German, French or Italian, please inform the General Secretariat as soon as possible so that a translation of the documents can be arranged.
     
  • Calls:
    • Deadline Track B (pre-proposal): 1 July 2022 (call closed)
    • Deadline Track B (full proposal): 1 September 2022 (call closed)

  • Funded projects:

Track C: Contribute projects

  • Goal: this track enables researchers to contribute to existing open communities built on ORD principles, validate their integration into existing infrastructures (also on an international scale), and focus on their potential to improve scientific impact and technical quality.
     
  • Budget: the total cost of the project (including matching funds) must not exceed CHF 100,000
     
  • Duration: up to 6-12 months
     
  • Language: Please note that due to the international composition of the Open Science Reviewers' Pool, applications in English are preferred. Should you nevertheless wish to apply in German, French or Italian, please inform the General Secretariat as soon as possible so that a translation of the documents can be arranged.
     
  • Calls:
    • Deadline Track C 1st Call: 1 December 2022 (call closed)
    • Deadline Track C 2nd Call: 19 July 2023 (call closed)
