R&D-Newsletter ZHAW, Sept. 2022, No 65 Version Deutsch
Dear colleague
We open our autumn newsletter with good news from our researchers working at a European level. From a ZHAW point of view, we can also report just as positively on two recently completed calls for project proposals of the Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH). In addition to our researchers, we would also like to focus on two ZHAW students who have received funding as part of the First Ventures programme of the Gebert Rüf Foundation. As regards goings-on within the ZHAW itself, this newsletter provides information on the launch of the new focus area of applied gerontology as well as news from the area of research data services. I hope you enjoy our newsletter.

Horizon Europe – new successes |
In the newsletter of 17 March 2022, we were able to announce the first four successful submissions for the Horizon Europe funding programme. Despite the short time since, we can already report on five further projects that are following in their footsteps. The following researchers are part of a successful Horizon Europe consortium as associated partners: |
• | | Thomas Michael Bohnert (Institute of Applied Information Technology), partner in the A lightweight software stack and synergetic meta-orchestration framework for the next generation compute continuum (NEPHELE) project. |
|
• | | Zala Schmautz and Ranka Junge (Institute of Natural Resource Sciences), partners in the INtegrated and Circular Technologies for Sustainable city region FOOD systems in Africa (InCiTiS-FOOD) project. |
|
• | | Dominik Refardt (Institute of Natural Resource Sciences), partner in the Exploring microalgae diversity for the development of novel antiviral compounds (Algae4AV) project |
|
• | | Josef Spillner (Institute of Applied Information Technology), partner in the Cloud open source research mobility network (Cloudstars) project |
|
• | | Jürgen Schumacher (Institute of Computational Physics), partner in the Doctoral network for microprocess engineering for electrosynthesis - new synthesis concepts for pharmaceutical/ fine chemical industry (MiEL) project |
|
We would like to congratulate the researchers and the three participating institutes. |

New (ZHAW) projects as part of two DIZH calls |
The Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH), which consists of the ZHAW, UZH, ZHdK and PHZH, intensifies exchanges with both practitioners and the public. To this end, DIZH is funding four innovation structureswith a total of CHF 16 million. The ZHAW is involved in all structures and heads two of them. In an interview, the ZHAW experts involved explain what benefits these structures will yield in the future. Four projects have also been approved by DIZH within the framework of the Rapid Action Call “Dealing with emergencies as a result of the war against Ukraine”. Thanks to their close practical relevance, digital solutions can contribute to the handling of emergency situations arising as a consequence of the war against Ukraine. Three of the projects are being conducted by ZHAW researchers, including the project of Andri Gerber. He wants to design a videogame for young Ukrainian refugees that will make them more familiar with the city and help them cope with their grief. The next DIZH call for project proposals has recently been launched.

ZHAW-Gewinnerprojekte First Ventures (bamr) |
As part of the current call for proposals of First Ventures, the Gebert Rüf Foundation support programme for entrepreneurial students at universities of applied sciences, the ZHAW project “Dermato Therma” has been chosen as one of two winning projects. While working on their project and Bachelor’s thesis, Davide Paparo and Ian Häusler from the School of Engineering collaborated on a prototype that can cure the skin disease cutaneous leishmaniasis using radio frequency waves. For their planned market launch, the Systems Engineering graduates devised a project plan that impressed the Gebert Rüf Foundation jury and saw them come out on top as winners of financial support from the First Ventures programme. Congratulations! |

Kick-off event for the focus area of applied gerontology (AGe+) |
On 13 June, around 50 ZHAW employees came together for the kick-off event for the new focus area of applied gerontology (or AGe+ for short). Invitations to the event were sent out to representatives from all of the ZHAW’s Schools with an interest in the topic of ageing, either because they research the subject, teach it or deal with it in some other way. As the gathering placed a focus on networking within the ZHAW, it was decided to use a speed-dating set-up to promote discussion. During ten rounds of five minutes each, those in attendance got the chance to strike up conversation with five individuals who, while dealing with the same topic, may adopt a completely different perspective in how they approach it. The subsequent workshops on health, technology, participation and social policy allowed participants to deepen their technical knowledge. The entertainment provided by the “anundpfirsich” improvisational theatre group, which humorously reflected what the participants had seen and heard in the workshops, was much appreciated. To round things off, the discussions were continued at a food and drinks reception during which those in attendance enjoyed a musical performance by Christine Lauterburg & Doppelbock. The atmosphere during the event was very lively and enthusiastic, with the varied programme and short sequences, in particular, being well received. The event marks the start of intensified cooperation between the Schools in the field of ageing. However, this should not remain a mere declaration of intent: AGe+ is providing funding totalling CHF 100,000 for 2022 as start-up financing for inter-School projects. The call for proposals can be found on our intranet page (in German, internal only). The submission deadline is 14 October 2022. We look forward to receiving numerous applications! |
