R&D-Newsletter ZHAW, Dec. 2022, No 66
Version Deutsch

Dear colleague

This year’s final edition of the R&D newsletter takes us on a journey to faraway lands. The ZHAW recently joined a delegation visit to Asia, where it strengthened bilateral research relations in its role as Leading House South Asia and Iran. The university was also present and active in Sharm El-Sheikh, which hosted the annual UN Climate Change Conference in November. As always, we report on our research activities at a European level, while also providing news of our membership in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (COARA).
I would like to wish you a successful end to the year and a wonderful holiday season!

Leading House South Asia and Iran:“Getting to know each other in person and having personal relationships are important in India”
The ZHAW has been working on behalf of the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) since in 2017 in its role as Leading House South Asia and Iran, promoting bilateral research relations between Switzerland and the nine mandate countries. At the beginning of October 2022, a delegation headed by Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin embarked on a state visit to India. Doris Hysek, manager of the Leading House at the ZHAW and a member of the delegation, describes her impressions of the trip in an interview and highlights future opportunities for (ZHAW) researchers to connect with partners in India and other countries.

New (ZHAW) projects as part of two DIZH calls
This year, the ZHAW was once again represented at the annual climate negotiations, this time by Raphaela Kotsch, an employee at the Center for Energy and the Environment of the School of Management and Law. She co-organised a side event on carbon markets under the Paris Agreement, following a decision made at last year's COP26 in Glasgow to integrate the old market mechanism, which was in force under the Kyoto Protocol, into the Paris Agreement. The event discussed practical implementation issues and the associated implications for increasing the emission reduction targets of all countries. The entire side event can be viewed here.

Horizon Europe – successful ZHAW researchers
Despite the difficult general conditions, ZHAW researchers are successfully acquiring projects in Horizon Europe. We were already able to report successes in the newsletters of 17 March and 8 September, and we can now celebrate the successful evaluation of three further projects:
Jürgen Schumacher (Institute of Computational Physics), partner in the ROBUST PEMFC MEA DERIVED FROM MODEL-BASED UNDERSTANDING OF DURABILITY LIMITATIONS FOR HEAVY DUTY APPLICATIONS (PEMTASTIC) project
Mirko Bothien (Institute of Energy Systems and Fluid Engineering), partner in the Flexibility for Hydrogen (FLEX4H2) project
Matthias Rosenthal /Hans Doran (Institute of Embedded Systems), partners in the Reconfigurable Heterogeneous Highly Parallel Processing Platform for safe and secure AI (REBECCA) project
We would like to congratulate the researchers, their teams and the participating institutes.
These three latest successes bring the number of projects in Horizon Europe in which the ZHAW is involved up to twelve.

ZHAW joins the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (COARA)
As a university with a focus on applied research and development, research assessment is an important topic for the ZHAW. This is because the assessment criteria for applied R&D tend not to be all that well established and are not always easy to grasp from a quantitative perspective. For this reason, the ZHAW has joined the new Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (COARA). With around 400 founding members (universities, university associations, funding bodies, etc.), its objective is to advance the assessment of research work overall. The ZHAW has also already signed the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). COARA is now helping to put the intentions of the declaration into practice together with numerous and wide-ranging partners.
