ZHAW gründet Zentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz |
Das neu gegründete Centre for Artificial Intelligence (CAI) an der School of Engineering versteht sich als Kompetenzzentrum für KI, insbesondere für Machine Learning und Deep Learning. Es gliedert seine Arbeit in vier strategische Schwerpunkte: Autonomous Learning Systems, Explainable AI, Natural Language Processing sowie Computer Vision, Perception and Cognition. Am 29. Juni 2021 wird das CAI in einem feierlichen Rahmen eröffnet.

CLAIRE und ZHAW feiern die Eröffnung von CLAIRE Switzerland |
Auf dem Weg zum Erfolg von "AI made in Europe" feiert CLAIRE seine Reichweite in ganz Europa mit der Eröffnung von vier neuen Büros in Zürich, Oslo, Paris und Brüssel im Rahmen einer Office Launch Roadshow. Am Eröffnungsanlass von CLAIRE Switzerland am 26. Mai 2021 (16-18 Uhr) nehmen hochrangige KI-Experten teil, wie Frédérick Bordry (CERN), Claudio Mirti (Microsoft), Peter Broennimann (SBFI), Sasha Rubel (UNESCO), Irene Kitsara (World Intellectual Property Organization) und Boi Faltings (EPFL). Privacy & Democracy, Start der ZHAW digital Veranstaltungsreihe 2021 |
Am 15. Juni um 17 Uhr legen wir los! ZHAW digital freut sich ausserordentlich, die diesjährige Veranstaltungsreihe mit Prof. Effy Vayena zu starten. Als Professorin für Bioethik an der ETHZ ist sie zweifelsfrei eine der renommiertesten Expertinnen an der Schnittstelle Medizin, Daten und Ethik. Als Teil der Expertengruppe für digitale Epidemiologie der COVID-19 Science Task Force konzentriert sich ihre Arbeit auf wichtige gesellschaftliche Fragen von Daten und Technologie und wie sie auf die öffentliche und persönliche Gesundheit angewendet werden oder werden sollten. Melde dich direkt an, falls du die Gelegenheit, mit einer Expertin zu sprechen, nicht verpassen möchtest.

Eingabeschluss für dritte DFF-Vergabe: 25. Juni 2021 |
Der DFF Call 2020 neigt sich mit dem letzten der drei Vergabezeitpunkte dem Ende zu. Bis zum 25. Juni um 23:59 Uhr eingereichte Anträge werden berücksichtigt. Wer also eine Idee für ein Projekt im Bereich der digitalen Transformation hat, das übergeordneten Nutzen an der ZHAW oder darüber hinaus stiftet, und sich bis Ende 2021 umsetzen lässt, sollte dieses jetzt eingeben. Für den Herbst ist ein neuer Call geplant.

ZHAW und FHNW digitalisieren Schweizer Dialekte |
Manuela Hürlimann von der School of Engineering mobilisiert mit ihrem DFF-Projekt die ganze deutschsprachige Schweiz. Zusammen mit der FHNW ruft Manuela mit ihrem Team zu einer Datensammlung von Schweizerdeutschen Dialekten auf. Die Bevölkerung kann ab sofort mithelfen, indem sie mit einer einfachen Web-App Sprachaufnahmen erstellt. Mit den digitalisierten Dialekten können wichtige Computerprogramme trainiert werden.

Dolmetschen in Gebärdensprache |
Andri Reichenbacher vom ICT-Accessibility Lab der ZHAW School of Engineering hat in seinem DFF-Projekt eine App entwickelt, damit gehörlose ZHAW-Angehörige Gebärdensprachdolmetschende zu ihrem Online-Meeting einladen können. Und DIZH Fellow Christiane Hohenstein vom Departement Angewandte Linguistik forscht, um Menschen, die in Gebärdensprache kommunizieren, das Studieren im digitalen Zeitalter zu erleichtern. Digitalisierung in der Geburtshilfe |
In vielen Berufen, in denen der persönliche Kontakt zum Menschen im Vordergrund steht, hat die Digitalisierung einen schwierigen Stand. Aber auch in der Geburtshilfe können digitale Hilfsmittel die Arbeit von Hebammen erleichtern. Im Blogbeitrag erfahrt ihr von unserem DIZH Fellow Michael Gemperle, was die Digitalisierung in der Geburtshilfe bewirken kann – und was nicht.

Besser mit DeepL, Google Translate & Co. umgehen |
Alice Delorme Benites aus der Angewandten Linguistik weiss, dass maschinelle Übersetzungssysteme unter ZHAW-Forschenden beliebt sind. Im Rahmen eines DIZH Fellowships und eines DFF-Projekts untersucht sie, wie man maschinelle Übersetzungen für Papers, Abstracts oder Forschungsanträge nutzen kann und was es dabei zu beachten gibt. In einem Leitfaden gibt sie interessante Ratschläge und Hinweise, um Wissenschaftstexte (Publikationen, Anträge usw.) von Deutsch ins Englische zu übertragen.

Über 2100 Teilnehmende am 1. ZHAW-edX-MOOC |
Im März startete der erste ZHAW-MOOC auf der Lernplattform edX zum Thema Aquaponik. Dieser weltweit erste universitäre MOOC (massive open online course) zu dem Thema hat von seinen Teilnehmenden sehr positives Feedback erhalten: 100% haben gerne am Kurs teilgenommen, 83% würden ihn weiterempfehlen, 73% lernten mehr als sie erwartet haben und 92% schätzten die Vielfalt dieses Kurses. Der nächste Kurs startet am 20.9.2021. ZHAW-Angehörige können mit einem Zugangscode eine kostenfreie Zertifizierung anfordern (Einschreibung bis spätestens 31.7.2021). BSc-Studierende in Umweltingenieurwesen im 4. Semester haben die Möglichkeit, den Kurs im Rahmen ihres Studiums zu absolvieren.

Erste Umfrageergebnisse zum Moodle Makeover Programm legen es nahe: unsere Moodle-Kurse sind schöner geworden! Zahlreiche Dozierende liessen sich zur Verschönerung ihrer Moodle-Kurse in Webinaren inspirieren und haben Gelerntes bereits umgesetzt. ZHAW launches Centre for Artificial Intelligence |
The newly launched Centre for Artificial Intelligence (CAI) at the School of Engineering considers itself a competence centre for AI with specific focus on machine learning and deep learning. The Centre divides its activities into four strategic key areas: Autonomous Learning Systems, Explainable AI, Natural Language Processing as well as Computer Vision, Perception and Cognition. On 29 June 2021, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence will open in a festive setting.

CLAIRE and ZHAW celebrate the launch of CLAIRE Switzerland |
On its mission to ensure the success of "AI made in Europe", CLAIRE is celebrating its reach across Europe by launching four new offices in Zurich, Oslo, Paris and Brussels in an Office Launch Roadshow. Many high-ranking AI-experts will participate at the launch event of CLAIRE Switzerland on 26 May (4 to 6 p.m.): Frédérick Bordry (CERN), Claudio Mirti (Microsoft), Peter Broennimann (Swiss Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI), Sasha Rubel (UNESCO), Irene Kitsara (World Intellectual Property Organization) and Boi Faltings (EPFL). Privacy & Democracy - start of the ZHAW digital event series 2021 |
We kick off on 15 June at 5 p.m.! ZHAW digital is delighted to start this year's event series with Prof. Effy Vayena. As a professor of bioethics at ETHZ, she is undoubtedly one of the most renowned experts at the intersection of medicine, data and ethics. As part of the Expert Group on Digital epidemiology of the Swiss National COVID-19 Science Task Force her work focuses on important societal issues of data and technology and how they are or should be applied to public and personal health. Deadline for the third DFF award date: 25 June |
The DFF Call 2020 is soon coming to a close with the third and final award date approaching. The Call considers all projects submitted by 25 June at 11:59 p.m. A new Call is planned for autumn. If you have an idea for a project in the area of digital transformation with an overarching benefit within the ZHAW or beyond and that can be realized by the end of 2021, you can submit your proposal directly on the grantplatform.

ZHAW and FHNW digitalise Swiss dialects |
With her DFF project, Manuela Hürlimann of the School of Engineering mobilises all of German-speaking Switzerland. Together with the FHNW, Manuela and her team call for support on collecting Swiss German dialects. As of now, the public can help by recording language samples with a web-based app. The digitalised dialects can train important computer programmes.

Sign language interpretation |
In his DFF project, Andri Reichenbacher of the ICT-Accessibility Lab of the ZHAW School of Enginnering has developed an App that enables deaf ZHAW employees and students to invite sign language interpreters to online meetings. And DIZH Fellow Christiane Hohenstein of the ZHAW School of Applied Linguistics is conducting research to make it easier for people who communicate in sign language to study in the digital age. Better use of DeepL, Google Translate & Co. |
Alice Delorme Benites from the ZHAW School of Applied Linguistics knows that machine translation systems are popular among ZHAW researchers. As part of a DIZH Fellowship and a DFF project, she is investigating how to use machine translation for papers, abstracts or research proposals and what to consider. In her guide, she gives advice and tips on how to translate German scientific texts into English - e.g. for publication purposes or for project proposals.

More than 2100 participants at the first ZHAW-edX-MOOC |
In March the first ZHAW MOOC on aquaponics was launched on the edX learning platform. This first university MOOC (massive open online course) on the subject worldwide received very positive feedback from its participants: 100% enjoyed taking part in the course, 83% would recommend it to others, 73% learned more than they expected and 92% appreciated the diversity of this course. The next course will start from 20.9.2021. ZHAW staff and students can request an access code for a free certificate (enrolment by 31.7.2021). BSc students in environmental engineering in the 4th semester also have the option of taking the course as part of their studies.
