Horizon Europe – first successes in a challenging environment
When previously reporting on Horizon Europe in this newsletter, we focussed on the special requirements arising from Switzerland’s status as a third country.
However, we are pleased that we can now also report on the successes achieved by ZHAW researchers in the 9th EU research and innovation framework programme. Although Horizon Europe only really got going last spring and participants from Switzerland had to adapt to the changed requirements, the submissions of four ZHAW researchers and their teams have already been met with a positive response:

Innosuisse announces «Swiss Accelerator» for direct funding of start-ups and SME
The "EIC Accelerator" of the European Innovation Council (EIC) is the EUs funding instrument for growing highly innovative start-ups and SME in Horizon Europe. Unfortunately, Swiss companies are currently excluded from this program. Innosuisse will close one of the larger gaps in Swiss Innovation funding in the Context of Horizon Europe. The “Swiss Accelerator”, as announced by the federal council, will likely be structed similarly to the European Example, with the main difference that funding will be provided directly by Switzerland. It is to be expected that there will be substantial and partial funding for highly innovative projects, that can contribute to strong growth of a start-up or SME.
The call will be published on the 1st of April 2022. On the 8th of April 2022, Innosuisse will host a webinar for further information.

“Large project calls require that you are in joint networks with other universities.”
Armin Eberle, Head of the ZHAW Energy Research Board (ZERB), provides a current insight into energy research conducted at the ZHAW. In the interview, he reveals which new energy research projects are being funded internally, what plans ZERB has for the future and where the area of energy research in Switzerland is heading in general.

Armin Eberle, the winners of the fourth project call of the ZHAW Energy Research Board, or ZERB for short, were just announced. What can you tell us about the winning projects and why exactly were these projects selected?

News on the ZHAW’s research data services
The ZHAW becomes a member of the Swiss Reproducibility Network
The ZHAW has joined the Swiss Reproducibility Network as a so-called local node and member institution. Dr Christoph Hofer from the Institute of Data Analysis and Process Design and Dr Vanessa Klaas from Research and Development are representing the ZHAW within the network and the topic of reproducibility at the ZHAW. Membership in the network provides the opportunity to exchange information and ideas with other institutions, to participate in working groups on issues such as training and pre-registration and to increase the reproducibility of research at the ZHAW via activities including coffee lectures, training courses and community building.

Action Plan for the Swiss Open Data Research Strategy adopted
The Swiss scientific institutions swissuniversities, the ETH Board, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences have adopted the Action Plan for the Open Research Data (ORD) Strategy. The Action Plan fleshes out the measures included in the national ORD strategy, which was published in July 2021. Responsibility for the strategic leadership of the ORD Action Plan will be assumed by a broad-based Strategy Council comprising high-profile officials from the participating institutions. The ZHAW is significantly involved in this process through the membership of Prof. Jean-Marc Piveteau. He is being supported by Elena Šimukovič from the ZHAW University Library, who is acting as his representative in the ORD Coordination Group.

Sandra Grizelj joins R&D and Business Services
On 1 February, Sandra Grizelj joined R&D as part of the team responsible for the project database, which forms part of the ZHAW’s research database. Her main tasks include quality assurance of the registered research projects and the further development of the database in terms of content and technology. After completing her degree in Education at the University of Bern, Sandra Grizelj initially worked as an assistant and freelance journalist at swissinfo.ch. She subsequently went on to work as a project manager at Swiss Youth in Science before taking on a role as a project member and research associate at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. In parallel to her part-time position at the ZHAW, Sandra Grizelj is completing a doctorate in the area of historical educational research at the University of Zurich as part of the SNSF’s Sinergia project.
